Just marking this as watched, so that I don't fall for it again, because it tricked me twice already. I started watching this, but it's so cringe and annoying that I stopped (and I was on a no brain almost anything goes "comedy" weekend binge). But as mentioned, I forgot that I have once already been through this.
Not even fast forwarding and 2x could help this.
Every once in a while I look for movies like "palm springs" or "edge of tomorrow" or even "groundhog day" and this gets suggested, and yeah, and this is how i fall for it.

I am grateful for the letterboxd community, because last night after I binged it and just_sat_there, I just_wanted_to_talk_about_it, (but who does one talk to at 4am with the face puffy with tears), so reading through the various comments and reviews thoughts really helped stay_there a little longer.
I too went into this for the rom-com vibes and the plan to distract myself a little and have a little laugh or two.Well, well, well...

I made a friend across the Atlantic and so when we both waited for our planes (for days on the beach) I invited him to come along to watch a movie with me. I didn't know much about it either.
This was our conversation after:"Would you watch this movie twice?"
"I don't think watching it twice would be a good metric for me, I almost never do it."The next day:
"I think a better metric would be would I recommend this movie to others."
"And would you?"
"Maybe I would recommend to people who wanted to see Emma Stone have sex a lot?"
"Yes, that's fitting."Then we went into the sea and the big waves were tumbling us around, and between them:
"Why do you think there was so much sex in the movie?"
"Hm, maybe the director likes Emma Stone's titties?"A few more waves:
"Hmmm, except the part where she has a baby brain"A few more tumbles:
"Maybe it's to show how she goes from being excited about sex, (like why do people not do this all the time) to becoming indifferent and switching off."A few futile strokes against the current:
"Maybe that's it, maybe that's the point, like if you come to sex with innocence and excitement other people will ruin it for you, (because everyone is broken)."
----Also, I love the Duncan Wanderbutt character development, it's good to see a nice portrayal of this phenomenon.
Also, I love my brother's review:
letterboxd.com/dinof/film/poor-things-2023/1Also, I find all those reviews about menstruation "hilarious" (I understand what you are trying to say but) I mean there's a brain transplants and dogducks.

Sucked. I did cry and cute and all.
But where is the pixar that also gives you a way to explain the world through new terms, or helps you understand, put words or images or concepts to experiences, life and events.
This could have been a movie with humans and nothing would have changed. Also why do the immigrant parents have such shitty english.
They did me dirty with Luca, now theyβve done it again.I mean i was still kinda pleased i watched it and i cried, but i expect more from you pixar. Like rivers of tears with a ok ok i will live my life fully and say i love you to everyone that means something to me aftermath.

I had a solid laugh.
Actually, quite "gentle".
Very silly, also how Johnny is awkward and does so many stupid things but they end up working out.
It's not a must watch, but I was happy to spend the two hours on it, and the next day, wanting some more levity, I watched part 3. (I never watched the OG one).
Actually it reminds me again of that stupid interaction at the videoteque in my home town when the not-so-kind clerk didn't help me find the "james bond parody" movie (when I was looking for austin powers) saying there are so many.
Well even if I watched this one instead of austin powers it would be an ok mistake. To be fair this one is more wholesome, that one was more memeable. (and I don't think you need to see the movie to get the memes). I am thinking of zoolander too, and I am happy I watched that, but austin powers left me with a sour taste.
Anyways, Jhonny english is a tasty, but relatively forgettable apple on a nice hike. Like you are so happy you had it with you, and you have a lovely moment together.
And when I sit down, on some days wanting to watch a silly movie, this is the kind of apple you really want.

One more movie in the series of watching movies at my uncles. We had half of this on on mute before we turned on the sound.
We came up with alternative dialogue. We commented the movie out loud, at some point we were so invested we turned the sound on and actually watched it.
One line of comments was the lady's state of affairs, how frizzy her hair was, how non white her clothing, how ripped her shirt. Each additional scene containing her, had a further step in dismantling her bossbitch stance.
It's not a great movie (insert meme of "look how they massacred my boy"), but it's dinosaurs. And I am kind of reluctant to think of the (massacred) diplodocus scene as a mirror to that first incredible one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep_blZhvI2A).Anyways, it got us invested, and what else does one want for a Friday eve with family.
Also, moral of the story: when money talks, listen to the "is this actually a good idea" bit.

The boy who cried wolf (but the wolf was always there so the boy had to armwressel the wolf) the movie.
watched it at my uncles last night (where the TV is always on), but to be fair I enjoyed this a fair bit.
It's a silly movie, we know the format, the bandits were that good mix of clever stupid.
At least in this movie is like ok they can afford this massive house when the dad works all the time somewhere flying, and the mum also works in some hedge fund something.
2 things breaking the magic of film. The mum is like 25, and the kid set up all these traps in one morning, and I with some of my life behind me was like oh buddy, buddy, it takes half a day to fix a screw on a toilet seat, but yeah sure, entrepreneurial DYI 8 year olds.
I also thought that plan of going there during the snow storm was great, the parked car + postbox to confuse the plow. EXCELLENTE...

(haha ok ok after reading some other reviews there are many-a-thing that could break the movie magic, but you know I eat those up for the home alone suspension of disbelief) -

I tried to watch the silicon valley, but I felt so awkward it made me feel nauseous (probably because there is actual sincerity in it, and desperation, and all those emotions that make us want more more more for us, without "processing" the damage, which is why this whole climate mess we made is upon us)
Anyways, as a comparison, I've been going through all these climate movies and books and animal exploitation movies with quite some ease, I guess, because finally I can "talk to someone" about it. Or at least someone talks to me about it.
Again a movie I was positively surprised about.
It was actually made with a lot of sensitivity, the stories of past trainers (who were often just kids), were nicely woven into the narrative of the accidents and attacks that happened. Most of the people felt very gentle and sincere, it was touching to hear, and see how the actions were remembered, re-understood, re-realized, tried to be processed.---
What a life this poor boy.
Trauma. Two things are on my mind:
- A while ago I heard this: "I loved going to the zoos as a kid for the same reason I hate them now: I love animals"
(which in itself holds the story of realization of how the world is quite a bit more messed up compared to what we think when we are kids)
How beautiful are those black and white wetsuits, and seeing those trainers play, jump around and have these loving interactions with animals, it really lights up something inside.- that letterbox review that mentioned jerking off. Found it! "Minus half a star for making me watch a whale receive a hand job." Haha, I'd give it an extra star for it. I don't know, it felt like they were showing the reality, same with the happy-trainer-jumping-around scenes, with the scary scenes, with the commercials. it is what it is, and sometimes, a bit of a finger tickle really helps them push over the edge. It's part of "animal husbandry". Like, I just read 80% of dairy cow is done by insemination in the usa. So if you drink milk or njamanjama cheese it's because someone put their hand inside of some cow.
(oh btw, on the topic of whale penises, some people say that the whale penises are what made sailors think that of sea monsters, www.iflscience.com/-a-surprising-number-of-sea-monster-sightings-can-be-explained-by-whale-erections-59294 equisite, someone got an ignobel for the research on the topic!)
And then that last scene when they take the trainers out to see orcas in the wild is just so absolutely heartbreaking.
These kids, and seeing the lives their friends could have had, who knew these animals so much, never saw these animals in their homes, with their families, never so majestic."Swimming in a straight line."

So i started watching this a few months ago, but then it was annoying (even before the big reveal) so I stopped, and yesterday I was about to cross it off my to watch list and just give it up, but I was still a lil curious about the story line, so I watched it at double speed.
Some 2xspeed highlights:
- when the guys run off to save themselves they run in the slapstick comedy from the silent era quick feet shuffle
- when they whisked stuff they were so speedy.Funnily I didn't miss more time during the "tense" scenes.
Anyway, I didn't like this movie, it felt it was "stupid".
Like everything was so "obvious", one leveled, i was not interested.
To be fair I was most curious about the main guy guest character and his ease and nonchalantery about the whole situation, and his eagerness to be excited about the food and all. At the end that's the person I was most curious about understanding what his motivations were, but he gets taken out (and people say fanboyism, but there's way more "malice" if you are willing to take someone down with you). Anyways why the enthusiasm.
As I read online a bit about this movie, this article was really interesting: tryst.link/blog/digesting-the-menu-sex-work-film/ (basically assessing the portrayal of the sex worker from a sex worker)
as mentioned in the article, cheers for the: "inversion of the dated βdead hookerβ trope in film". -

well I watched it because I noticed that mike judge (who did office space) also did silicon valley, and that was a tough watch (as a friend put it, it hit too close to home), so I was like ok lemme watch this.Yesterday as I watched it I was he he hi hi, but today when I thought about it a little more I actually feel it fits in my climate movie watching session so well.

lool not the al gore poster teardown
that was hilarious
in any case i think we should all be a lil more kind to the imperfect activists.
people should feel like speaking up despite the fact that we all do all these shit climate things.
But speaking up and all the voices combined are for sure stronger than all the self censorship because one doesn't recyle as much, or fly around or secretly has a stash of plastic straws
I like the fact that I watched seaspiracy first, it's interesting to see the format, and to see what was done differently. Seaspiracy was imo better made.
I like that in seaspiracy there was a main guy alright, but he did say "and my parter", so that we knew who was filming all those hanging out with the computer and taking down the poster intimate shots.
I feel it was made with less sensitivity.
"we could feed everyone if we would give some of the feed we feed animals to the humans"
Unlike seaspiracy, I think it did go towards spokespeople "of wrong industires" a bit more aggressively, like showing the killing of cows while the person was talking about animal wellbeing, and I know it's BS but poor Sandy from CowLife Inc will have shit thrown at her unlike those people who ignored interview requests. It was interesting that most questions were left in, which acts as a "Reality - we didn't take things out of context" stamp.
And at the end they go hard into veganism, which fair fair, but I don't like how it said 1/7 days is nothing. It's a start. It helps people change behaviours/mentality.
Also impressive how far "beyond burger" went in these last few years, most restos in LAndAn have at least one option with meat replacements.
I think one takeaway from these and this movie is how much money leads the narrative. And of course it's nothing new, but wowsie, the 10 tips to xyz not including the most useful ones because money says so is sad. -

sad
as a "franchise fan", which is hilarious, but
- I actually wrote "Fast and Furious" as one of my favourite movies in an email to a boy when I was 13 years old or so
- I went to watch with relative regularity the movies that were coming out (some even to the cinema)
- Instagram is asking how often do you think about the roman empire, but how many times do you think about fast and furious? #nos, everytime i pedaltothemetal (anyways then i get to a truck loaded with logs, and I wonder why I am driving at all, and isn't it funny how quickly we could all get off at our final destination (another entry in that email).anyways this one is not good.
I couldn't finish through the cringe, the pushy emotions in the first scenes that usually come in the closing sequence, the stupid explosions. The thing that really got me, was seeing that they did a car chase scene in rome (rome must be giving some funding or what's going on), and mission impossible' car chase scene, also in rome, also on those stairs was just so much better and entertaining, that I was pissed.
Ciao.

Started watching this after my dream:
"""
I dreamt a zombie apocalypse or something and we were hiding in a house, but they of course were making grounds and then finally they were closing in on us, (like all the people in the house were already bitten (must have been a party or some public place, because it was big and also strangers)), and i was just left with one guy (dont know the guy) and i was like lets kiss (before we die) and he was like no. Anyways it was scary and stressful. I eventually got bitten (in my achilles tendon) and suddenly everyone was nice just chilling having a great time hanging out. Basically the zombies were just having a great time and living the best life.
"""
because I was like, I wonder if there are any movies from the zombie perspective.Anyways, I watched a few more snippets, and finally gave up today,
It's a silly movie, and maybe it could have a place in some people's hearts, but not my own, not now.
(and despite stopping half way I feel pretty sweet about the movie : ))Good luck zombies.
Some things are really funny, and the way they show zombie vs human reality is really hilarious. Funny no, how in many movies the zombies are kinda slow.

I held off watching this because based on the reaction when it came out, I though it was way more sensationalistic or at least gruesome (maybe a bit like the cove if I remember correctly).
Well this was surprisingly "factual" in the sense, that yeas this is what's happening. and what this movie does well is the scale of things.
I was always surprised by how few people had any relationship with anything under the surface (having grown up what feels like underwater), but recently as the realisation of how few people get to see the sunset into the sea, and as the next step how few people actually know how to swim, that the sea really is 2D (obliga plug for underwater rugby the "only 3D sport")
In any case, it brought up some "interesting" numbers and "did you know"s (like the bit about what is actually forbidden in a marine protected area - I just got a petition then the morning after where an org was like plz sign this petition to stop trawling in this MPA, isn't that quite lol).
I actually "enjoyed" it, and would recommend it.
